Scott Williams has been given his wish.
Now, it seems, we’ll see if he can fulfill the Mavs’ wishes.

JAZZ COVERAGE
Williams, 35, was put on waivers by the Phoenix Suns on Wednesday, at his request. Though he started 10 games for the Suns (and averaged 7.3 points and 4.5 rebounds in the 16 games in which he appeared), he is obviously not part of Phoenix’ rebuilding plans. His high character – the Suns had asked him to remain with the franchise as an assistant coach and now talk of him someday returning to Phoenix – clearly played a role in his congenial escape from town.
As of late Wednesday, there is nothing official from the Mavs regarding their interest in Williams, who has title experience from his time with the Jordan-era Bulls. But it is believed that Dallas will put in a claim on him, and that none of the teams ahead of the Mavs in the claiming process intend on doing the same.
Williams, 6-10 and 260 pounds, would come to Dallas just as the present backup center, Shawn Bradley, is performing at his highest level of the season. It’s not yet clear whether Williams is viewed by management as a potential insurance policy because of Bradley’s injury problems and customary inconsistency, or whether Williams might be capable of fitting in as a contributor right away.
Williams was a member of three consecutive Chicago Bulls NBA championship teams in 1991, 1992 and 1993. Certainly he can be counted on to be in the right place at the right time.
But a cautionary note: Williams is a career backup, a guy who has only really been a full-time NBA starter once in his 16-year career. Lifetime, he’s about a five-point/five-rebound/16-minutes player.
In other words, we hope it’s true that nice guys finish first. But we doubt this nice guy is going to finish first-team.
