Henry Abbott from TrueHoop provided the inspiration when he asked the hypothetical question, “Can Your Team’s Coach Dunk?’’ DallasBasketball.com -- with help from some of the top NBA observers from around the blogosphere – is turning “hypothetical’’ into pseudo-reality with the inaugural “NBA Coaches Slam-Dunk Contest.
Allow us to introduce the judges (stretching their snark muscles) and the 16 “participating’’ NBA head coaches (stretching their soon-to-be-torn hammies, their soon-to-be-spasming backs and their soon-to-be-demolished pride) for DB.com’s “NBA Coaches Slam-Dunk Contest’’ – complete with a single-elimination bracket that in the next week or so, will deliver us. … a coaching, dunking champion:

As you can see, Round One matchups feature Sam Mitchell, Raptors vs. George Karl, Nuggets (pictured above in all his game-ready throwback glory; Scott Skiles, Bucks vs. Rick Carlisle, Mavs; Stan Van Gundy vs. Vinny Del Negro, Bulls; Doc Rivers, Celtics vs. Byron Scott, Hornets; Reggie Theus, Kings vs. PJ Carlisimo, Thunder; Mark Iavaroni, Grizzlies vs. Michael Curry, Pistons; Randy Wittman, T’Wolves vs. Phil Jackson, Lakers; Gregg Popovich, Spurs vs. Don Nelson, Warriors (pictured at right, shooting, as always.)
We’re not sure what to give the winner. A nap with Isiah Thomas? A diamond ring from The Kobe Bryant Collection? Lifetime custody of Keith Van Horn’s forever-expiring contract?
We’ll work on that while we introduce our esteemed panel of judges:
Tom Ziller from Sactown Royalty
Jonathan Somers-Harris from The Lakers Nation
“Franchise,’’ representing RaptorsHQ
Sarah (“Ticktock6’’) from Hornets Hype
Zebulun from Blue Blitz (OKC)
CB Jack from TrueBlueJazz
Mookie from A Stern Warning
“College Wolf’’ from TWolvesBlog
TK from The Blowtorch
Black and Blue Jor from The Howeva Files
Yours truly, Mike Fisher, representing DallasBasketball.com
Special guest Skin, friend of DB.com, host of the Mavs-heavy “Ben And Skin Show’’
Special guest Mark Followill (pictured at right below, sans microphone), voice of the Mavs
While the participants loosen up in anticipation for the DB.com NBA Coaches Slam-Dunk Contest, we invite
you to note that Detroit coach Michael Curry is already talkin’ trash, that New Orleans coach Byron Scott has provided video evidence of his hops and that we're hoping to track down Mavs insiders this week for their takes on how Rick Carlisle -- who is, after all, 6-5 and in rail-thin shape -- will fare in this contest.
Brace yourself, Dear Reader, for the low-flyingest slam-dunk contest ever. … unfolding over the course of the coming days (meaning, we’ll update it whenever we damn please). … starting with Round 1, Match 1: Sam Mitchell, Raptors vs. George Karl, Nuggets.
Stay tuned!
