It is said that in Tampa at Super Bowl XLIII, “there are no big storylines.’’ (Not counting the Jared-from-Subway angle.)
I would humbly submit, as someone who has covered in-person some 17 Super Bowls, that there are still big storylines. It’s the reporters who got small.
As a public service from someone not in Tampa, allow me to offer The Top 5 Storylines The Super Bowl Media Is Missing:
5 Richard Seymour, the star defensive end of the New England Patriots – a perennial Super Bowl contender and a franchise that purportedly “does it the right way’’ – has some issues at home. With a jealous wife. Who is being accused by police of being involved in a “lynching.’’
4 Emmitt Smith, from everything I hear, is bracing to be dumped by ESPN. He’s the NFL’s All-Time Leading Rusher! He’s standing right there next to 4,000 of you! Why doesn’t somebody ask him about it?
3 The NFL is making dough hand-over-fist. But the NFL Network isn’t. And the league appears to be putting the squeeze on NFL Films – including a possible adios to Mr. NFL Films himself, Steve Sabol.
2 My friends at ProFootballTalk.com unleashed a juicy rumor: Super Bowl QB Ben Roethlisberger may have had X-rays on his back. As PFT.com notes, the Steelers’ response to the report is notably vague. Guys. … there are only two QBs in this Super Bowl. One of them might have a serious back issue. Doesn’t anybody care?
1 The No. 1 darling of this Super Bowl Week has been brilliant Arizona receiver Larry Fitzgerald. Celeb reporters from Rick Reilly to Jason Whitlock have produced puff pieces on Fitz’ relationship with his dad, who apparently writes a column for a small weekly paper in Minnesota marketed to the 16 black people who live in my home state.
Being skimmed over by all the feel-good: Late last month, the mother of Fitzgerald’s young son claimed daddy beat her head against a marble floor while she was holding the baby.
But besides that, there really aren’t any big stories to chase at this Super Bowl.
