Fish is ducking out of town for a moment (Gone Fishin’?) so he’s leaving the wonks in charge. Let’s steal his world-famous “Morning Donuts’’ format and do a quick-but-technical Q-and-A on the breaking Marion-to-Dallas news:
Random answers on the Marion deal - from various questions here and there I'm being asked in various threads on DB.com Boards ...
DONUT 1. This deal has lots of CBA complexity - the GMs had to wade through lots of technicalities they don't usually consider, to get it done.
DONUT 2. Once the Gortat offer sheet went in (and it has already been submitted), Orlando had only two choices: match or don't match. The Marion deal is irrelevant to it. And unless Orlando matches, the MLE is used up.
DONUT 3. There may be other little details added before it is submitted. I have strong reason to believe the Orlando angle didn't get in the mix until after 10pm Dallas time today. League offices have been closed for the night for hours.
DONUT 4. Adding Orlando (which benefits Orlando and Toronto) forces Dallas to somewhat change the structure of their contract with Marion, and its structure won't be a traditional "start at $X and increase by the max raise amount each year" a result. So, did the Mavs get some sort of concession from Orlando and/or Toronto as a result?
DONUT 5. Orlando is in this deal so they can get a big TPE for Hedo. That allows them extra flexibility in replacing Hedo or filling the rest of their roster.
DONUT 6. Toronto now stays as an over-the-cap team and gets an MLE and they don't have to renounce Bird rights on Delfino or Parker.
DONUT 7. Orlando TPE will be $6.86+M.
DONUT 8. A TPE can't be traded to someone. It's merely used to get a player in a trade, and can be used piece by piece like MLE is used in signings.
DONUT 9. There will almost certainly be other TPE's in the deal. Not sure who gets them yet. I need to see final details before I can calculate them.
DONUT 10. Mavs' roster is super bloated. Other moves have to follow.
DONUT 11. Buckner has an instant expiring contract (Stack-like) and he will definitely get waived later this year. The Mavs might use it themselves, but don't be surprised if they picked up his chip to include in a package later with a team needing financial relief.
DONUT 12. Buckner instant expiring deadline isn't until 11/30.
DONUT 13. After this trade, Buckner and Humphries (who seem to be little more than filler here) can be traded alone at any time, but in a package they can't be traded for two months. Buckner's instant expiring deadline is well after that. How about a September trade of a bunch of random financial-relief parts to a team looking for same?
The September trade target? This will just be guessing on my part … the reading of tea leaves, you know. … but Fish ordered me to stay at the drawing board on that one for a bit. …
