LAS VEGAS -- No Mavs game in Las Vegas on Tuesday, but still plenty of good looks at Hasheem Thatbeet, Darrell Arthur, Jordan Hill, Ty Lawson and more. … we go raw and uncensored with your DB.com All-Access Pass and Scouting Report to Day 5 of Summer League ...
Game 1: Memphis 90 New York 86
* Hasheem Thabeet the No. 2 overall draft pick from Connecticut finished with 6 points (3-6 FG), 6 Rebounds and 1 blocked shot. This was the first game i've seen of Hasheem, but what stood out to me was how much he labored to get up and down the court- very slow which was surprising. I expected more athleticism out of the 7'3 267-lb Center who was hyped as the best defensive player in the draft. I'm afraid flashes of Sam Bowie come to mind....but again, this is one summer league game.
* Darrell Arthur- Dallas's own 6'9 PF was very impressive finishing with 22 points (8-15 FG), 6 Rebounds and 3 blocked shots. Darrell showed a nice game both inside and outside and looks to be a nice rotation player for the Grizzlies.
* Marcus Williams the 6'3 PG and 3 yr pro from Connecticut continued his strong play as a 'true' pg finishing with 16 points (5-15 fg), 5 rebounds and 5 assists. He was cold early missing on several attempts in the lane, but finished the game strong and was clearly the leader of the team.
* Sam Young the G/F from Pitt that some thought the Mavs should have drafted finished with 7 points (3-10 FG). He showed some potential, but was basically a non-factor in the game.
* Jordan Hill the 6'10 PF that was rumored to be a target of the Mavs before the Draft finished with 13 pts (6-13 FG) and 8 rebounds. Jordan had a slow start to the game, but showed flashes of his talent where he could out muscle/jump others for a rebound. Jordan did not demonstrate any mid-range game.
* Morris Almond the 6'6 guard and 2nd year Pro from Rice was the best perimeter player for New York. Morris finished with 17 pts (7-12 FG) and displayed a smooth stroke.
* Tony Douglas the #29 pick in the first round finished with 8 points (2-13 FG), but had 11 assists.
Game 2: Golden State 95 Chicago 83
* The Anthony Randolph Show- The 6'11 2nd yr Forward from LSU has been absolutely amazing and today was even better starting the game with 15 first quarter points and finishing with 42 points (13-22 FG) as Chicago had no answer for his athleticism and ability to get to the rim. His 42 points tied a summer league scoring record and after four games is averaging 26.8 pts, 8.5 rebounds and 3 blocks on 60 pct FG shooting. This kid has some serious potential and will be curious to see how the Big Don uses him in year two.
* Stephen Curry finished with 10 points (3-15 FG), 5 rebounds and 8 assists. As i stated in the Day 1 report, Stephon cannot create his own outside shot right now and is trying to force that which is leading to 'rushed' shots. The length at this level is bothering his outside game. However, when he goes to the lane he is unstoppable both as a finisher and a distributor so one thing i would like to see is for him to be more assertive driving the ball. He floated too much on the perimeter today. Best play of the day was a fast break in which Stephen lobbed a pass off the back board for a put back dunk by Randolph- these two will be fun to watch over the next couple of years together...
* Anthony Morrow started in place of Cartier Martin today and finished with 10 points (2-7 FG), but in my mind did not show any of the game that Cartier had showed in the previous three games. Maybe rust....but Cartier has been impressive and got a DNP.
* Acie Law – a report for the A&M faithful -- finished with 5 pts (1-1 FG), but got limited playing time and game by game his PT goes down. Not a good sign.
* James Johnson the 6'8 F from Wake Forest and #16 pick looked like the real deal finishing with 21 points (9-13 FG) and 8 Rebounds. He plays a very 'strong' game and demonstrates a nice outside shooting touch to go along with an ability to finish strong inside. By far the most impressive Bulls player.
* James Augustine the 6'10 F/C and 3rd yr pro from Illinois finished with 21 points (10-11 FG) and 7 Rebounds. Most were put backs under the basket, but give him credit for being in position for the easy buckets.
* Taj Gibson the #26 pick from USC finished with 14 points (5-11 FG), but more importantly 12 Rebounds with 7 coming on the offensive end.
Game 3: Spurs 78 Nuggets 76
* Was excited to see DeJuan Blair who was a DNP?
* George Hill finished with 16 points (5-12 FG) and struggled at times to work the ball past Ty Lawson who showed a great lower body strength to stay in front of Hill.
* Ian Mahinmi the 6'11 C from France was solid with 12 points (5-11 FG) and 16 Rebounds (5 offensive).
* Malik Hairston the 6'6 2nd yr G from Oregon finished with 17 points (7-11 FG) and showed some timely shooting.
* Ty Lawson finished with 8 points (0-7 FG), 3 assists, 1 rebound and 1 steal (0 turnovers). So not exactly a stat line worth noting, but his presence defensively was worth watching as he has a unique ability to stay in front of the guy he is defending. He missed several shots in the lane after making nice penetration moves. I'm curious to watch Ty's progression after his first summer league game as i believe he can be a true leader at the PG position.
* Coby Karl is a player as the 6'5 2nd yr guard finished with 19 points (6-7 FG) with limited playing time. He always found a way to be around the ball and put himself in position to score.
That's a wrap for the day …
