Wednesday Morning Donuts … sure, it’s mostly Mavs. Lamar Odom. Glen 'Big Baby' Davis. Charlie Brown. Donnie Nelson. Von Wafer. Stuff like that. But you don’t mind if I tell half-a-story about a night of drinking with my man Jerry Jones, do you?
DONUT 1: So here’s the link to the gang over at Blogging The Boys, and what this is a tease to a tease to a tease to check out a magazine story I’ve written.
But the tease is good, so go dip your toe in there.
DONUT 2: The Mavs are now a front-runner for the services of Lamar Odom?So says the LA Times, but the Times is only at the tip of the iceberg of how this sort of thing can happen. And of course, is WAY off on what Dallas can pay Odom. (Or again, a player like him) due to the availability of The Buck Shot.
DONUT 3: Having said that: Does Odom end up back with LA? Yeah. Sure. Probably. Dr. Buss is gonna break up a potential dynasty over a few mil? Nah. But I’m hearing from some fans who are so digging Hollinger’s Mavs-as-Charlie Brown analogy that they’re making it sound as if Dallas is going after players in some masochistic way. … like, swinging and missing is now Dallas’ modus operandi, its limit, its fate.
And if you think that way, you are missing out on the alternatives. Which would include a) the fan never knowing about Mavs ideas, concepts and proposals, or b) the Mavs never having any ideas, concepts or proposals.
Which would you prefer, Dear Reader? To know they’re trying, to know they’re not trying, or to not know anything at all?
DONUT 4: I’ve got more on this: One angle from the critics goes like so: “See! The Mavs failed on Redd and they failed on Rashard and now they’ve failed again! Fail!’’
In the summer of 2002, the Mavs made a bid for Rashard Lewis. He was impressed enough with the Mavs that he signed an offer sheet. As an RFA, the Sonics had the right to match on him. Which they did.
In the summer of 2003, the Mavs made a bid for Michael Redd. He was impressed enough with the Mavs that he signed an offer sheet. As an RFA, the Bucks had the right to match on him. Which they did.
As a result of those two “failures’’ – and again, what did you want Dallas to do – NOT bid on RFAs? -- the Mavs went on to win a Western Conference title.
Which part was the failure again?
DONUT 5: Rubio’s holdup is related not to his impudence but to his finance? You don’t say?
DONUT 6: David Lord wants to work on ways for the Mavs to land Von Wafer. So I’m giving the man lots of elbow room. Von Wafer it is.
DONUT 7: And Stein says Dallas is shopping Kris Humphries for a guard? Hey. .. Houston’s Von Wafer is a FA 2-guard! And Houston maybe could use a big man! You think?
Humphries is 6-9, so he's not Yao. Dallas' roster is getting a bit full, so is there really room for Wafer? Dallas also has big plans for its big assets, so -- if they even like Wafer as Lord does -- maybe they can get him, eventually, for the minimum.
Elbow-room thinking.
DONUT 8: Maybe buried underneath my pompoms in yesterday’s “Plan-Less & Pants-Less’’ defense of Mavs management was some actual inside scoopage regarding James Singleton and the hope that he might become Bass-like.
Sorry if you have to dig for it. But it’s in there. Under the pompoms. I promise.
DONUT 9: Speaking of defending the local GM vs. the Orlando GM: So Otis Smith dumped a lineup of:
Jameer/Vince/Dwight/Rashard/Hedo
to instead assemble a lineup of:
Jameer/Vince/Dwight/Rashard/ … and Bass/Gortat.
Like I said yesterday, genius is fluid.
DONUT 10: Star-Telegram columnist Gil LeBreton wants a piece of this same action. He tiptoes close to calling for the firing of Donnie Nelson. And I understand Gil's fury. But. … if you fire him for not landing Gortat, do you then re-hire him for keeping Kidd? And then fire him again for losing Bass? And then re-hire him for getting Marion?
DONUT 11: Instant updates on the Mavs and whatnot from DB.com are available at twitter.com/fishsports ... BTW, we've assembled 1,000 followers in less than three months. Thank you.
DONUT 12: Want proof that Dallas set a value for Brandon Bass, set a role for Brandon Bass, and then stuck to it … and will continue to stick to it? Watch and see if the Mavs spend $4 million to go get Glen ‘Big Baby’ Davis. If they do, it’s an admission that they want a mulligan on Bass. If they don’t?
It’s proof they have a plan.
