Thursday Morning Donuts ... a world in which Dirk Nowitzki is "overrated,'' in which every player traded or signed seems like "one that got away,'' in which Antoine Wright is choosing a favorite peanut butter, in which Steve Nash is still "Steve Cash,'' and in which Erin Andrews deserves to be looked at differently than you've been looking at her ...
DONUT 1: Let’s get the idiocy of Fox’s Charley Rosen out of the way first. He’s assembled a list of the NBA’s Most Overrated Players. The good news? Rosen wasn’t stupid enough to include Dirk Nowitzki on this inane list.
The bad news? In explaining his honorable mentions, he writes, The following multi-talented players have led their respective teams nowhere for so many years that their being overrated is no longer news
And THEN he includes Dirk Nowitzki.
DONUT 2: And on DB.com Boards comes the brilliant reaction: Wonder why Tariq Abdul Wahad didn't make Rosen’s underrated list?
You rookie readers will have to get a veteran DB.commer to explain that one to you.
DONUT 3: With Okafor and now Diogu, the Hornets get a jolt of talent. For the fun of it: Okafor/Diogu or Marion/Gooden?
DONUT 4: Atlanta’s retention of its own player, Marvin Williams, is another example of how we’ve got to remind ourselves that there are 30 teams in the league, all with their own assets and goals and connections … and of course, especially connections to their own players. This “ah, another one got away mentality’’ from some fans ignores the possibility/probability that somebody like Marvin – who would’ve made a cool Mav – wasn’t ever very available.
DONUT 5: Here’s a way to NOT get a job in the NBA: Ustream yourself all day and all night because you … well, I do not know the “because’’ that explains Marbury’s mindset right now.
Seriously, this is a different sort of "desperate.'' Why is this young man eating Vaseline? Because he's set up a video camera, pointed it at himself, and thinks he needs to ... do something?
DONUT 6: Rashad McCants is still under the impression that he just might land in Dallas. I support the attempt to catch Lightning In A Bottle with the kid, but the roster and the guaranteed contracts are starting to pile up. ...
DONUT 7: Raptors.com worked with me to interview Toronto newcomer Antoine Wright. Here’s the Q-and-A. (I was in charge of the questions about physical play, ‘Melo and coaching. Raptors.com handled the questions about peanut butter and geography. J )
DONUT 8: In response to so many people who think Erin Andrews is “asking for it’’ or even that she has
somehow set things up as an attention-getter, I direct you to this 911-call she made to police to report a pair of stalkers outside her home.
Again I say: Listen to this. Pretend it is your mom, wife, sister or daughter.
Then tell me of you are still laughing.
DONUT 9: Devean George is on the move again! Now he goes to Golden State (Nellie!) and Marco Belinelli goes to the international city of Toronto.
And if any one of you says, “Why didn’t we get him?!’’ I’m gonna hang myself.
DONUT 10: Here’s a Steve Nash ass-kissing column from Arizona in which the real moral to the story is ignored. Nashie is a good guy and a good player and a competitive dude. But in the end, he has re-upped in
Phoenix due to the same reason most players go places, and for the same reason Steve went there in the first place.
Cash. Steve Cash.
DONUT 11: Instant updates on the Mavs and whatnot from DB.com are available at twitter.com/fishsports ... you are part of a family now. Allow us to embrace you. In a completely hetero way, of course.
DONUT 12: Sam Smith says “the whispers’’ and “the gasps’’ are that Kevin Durant is poised to become a better player than LeBron. Nothing against Durant here, but it’s funny. … you’d think if those were league-wide whispers and league-wide gasps, someone besides Sam Smith would be hearing them.
