The Mavs took the court this morning for camp’s first “Training Day’’ … and while the session is closed, DB.com spies tell us that there are two “names in the news’’ who aren’t “names in camp.’’
Where is Shawne Williams?
Where is Amare Sy?
We explain …
Regarding Williams: We predicted that 6-9, 225-pound wing might be persona non grata at this camp … but we didn’t know he’d be completely de-invited. That appears to be the case with the third-year prospect, who was absent from the team last spring for “personal reasons’’ and appears to have personal-reasoned himself out of camp. Mavs officials are being careful about what they say here, but it seems like this is reminiscent of what the Pacers did a year ago with Jamaal Tinsley, when they simply prevented him from coming to camp. Hopefully it doesn’t get as ugly as the Tariq Abdul-Wahad deal a few years ago, when the Mavs told him to quit coming to work ... but Abdul-Wahad came to practice anyway, and pretty much just worked out by himself.
Worst of all, of course, is that it echoes some of the problems Williams had before, when he himself was in Indy.
What’s also ugly about this situation, of course, is that Dallas has one more year of a guaranteed contract to pay Williams. So hemight be persona non grata … but the paycheck will still read “Shawne Williams.’’
Regarding Sy: We’ve confirmed the story. The Mavs were indeed interested in bringing the flying Frenchman to camp, and were indeed involved in negotiations. But they ran into an immigration snag, one that would’ve taken more than a week to clear up … and finally it was decided that by the time the week had expired, Sy’s usefulness as a camp body – which is all he was slated to be – might have expired, too.
So no Sy. And no Shawne.
But more news from “Training Day 1’’ to come …
