A FISH on ESPN announcement coming up ... if you are a Mavs lover and a DB.com lover, you are going to dig this. ... Plus, the Mavs at the line, Shaq sleeping with the wrong woman, a Spurs drinking game, Popeye Jones questions, and -- what's this? -- Mark Followill has never seen the movie "Grease''? That's an outrage -- and part of DB.com's Friday Morning Mavs Donuts!
DONUT 1: We're still ironing out the details of a project that involves me, the Mavs and 103.3 ESPN Radio. ... I should have an announcement later today. ... In the meantime, tonight’s “FISH on ESPN’’ appereance is from 10-to-midnight as we focus on high-school football, and then. ... well, hang on. Announcement coming!
DONUT 2: I stated yesterday in my Voodoo story that at 76 percent, J.J. Barea is a “fine’’ free-throw shooter. A note from my man EricCeleste from D Magazine:
“Fish, good column. But but JJ is not a "fine free-thrower." he is averaging 76 percent for his career; the NBA average is always around 75 percent.’’
Eric, thanks for the clarification. And let me take this a step beyond, to a NY Times piece that insists that the league average is about 75 percent and it has always been about 75 percent and no matter what anybody ever does, it’s always going to be 75 percent.
DONUT 3: I said this to Mark Followill’s face last night, and I said it exactly as I had to my TV screen on Wednesday night:
“What do you mean, you’ve never seen the movie ‘Grease’?’’
“I guess,’’ Followill said, “I’ve just never gotten around to it. Somehow it just doesn’t appeal to me. Maybe I'm not a big movie guy, I don't know.’’
The Mavs play-by-play voice revealed this scandalous information during the Mavs-Hornets telecast, and I was and am stunned.
Followill is a pop-culture guy, age 38, owns a television set. … how can he have never seen the movie “Grease’’? I told him that in his 11 years of doing Mavs broadcasts that this is the most outrageous thing I’ve ever heard him say. I told him I was going to invite him over to the house for a “Grease’’ film festival.
“Sure, I’m in,’’ Mark said. “’Grease,’ huh? Is that the one with John Travolta in it?’’
DONUT 4: Big Mavs practice today. Big because I’m going. A full report this afternoon, kids.
DONUT 5: It’s a different sort of drinking game: For every night the Spurs play without the presence of a bat (or Manu’s murder of one), you get a free pint of lager.
DONUT 6: The “FISH on FOOTBALL’’ stuff is up and running at Blogging The Boys. Stats, snark, insight, quote, news, more snark. ... please head on over to Mike Fisher’s new Cowboys home at BtB and enjoy! Show your support for all things FISH and check it out!
The issue of the day that I handle over there: Why Roy Williams not being "No. 1'' doesn't matter ... as long as somebody is.
DONUT 7: Your DallasBasketball.com T-shirt is available! The “DallasBasketball.com classic’’ and “The UberMan’’ and the “Fish for Lunch’’ and “The DUST Chip’’ are yours for the taking! Please visit the DB.com Store today!
P.S.: You'll see folks wearing them Saturday at the AAC. Also, some very fashionably astute Mavs fans who live in San Antonio have ordered up “the classic’’ DB.com shirt just in time for the Nov. 11 Mavs-at-Spurs meeting. Look for ‘em on the TV!
DONUT 8: The Mavs’ search for a PA announcer – and for your vote – marches on.
DONUT 9: LeBron to the Lakers?! Oh, it’s a story by Sam Smith. Never mind.
DONUT 10: So does Nancy Lieberman’s new job as the Frisco D-League head coach begin to forge a path for a woman to be an NBA head coach? Lieberman can see it. …
By the way: If Donnie/Del/Spud/Nancy and that staff put on a basketball show with the same aplomb with which they throw a party, success is inevitable.
DONUT 11: Speaking of “pioneers,’’ the Celtics’ Glen “Big Baby’’ Davis claims he’s considering a move to the NFL.
He’s got a broken thumb because he got in a fight, he talks about going to the NFL. … you know, maybe there is a reason teams passed on him, eh?
Anyway, click on the link for the story and some video of Davis playing running back in high school. It’s worth some chuckles watching this chucklehead.
DONUT 12: Regarding the Popeye Jones DUI arrest: I’m still not clear …
*On whether the Mavs family member has a bloodied face because he “fell,’’ as one report claimed. …
*Or because he was “forced to the ground after resisting arrest,’’ as was stated in another report …
*And if he resisted arrest, why hasn’t he been charged with that offense?
*And why the police video of the event (shot from the cop car) hasn’t been released.
In these cases, those videos are generally invaluable. They demonstrate the demeanor and sobriety-test performance of the suspect. But they also demonstrate the demeanor and performance of the police officers.
So where is that video?
DONUT 13: It seems the married Shaq is having an affair. Hey, it happens, right? It’s really nobody’s business and it’s really not news.
Oh, he is allegedly having an affair with the fiancée of Gilbert Arenas? That would seem to add another layer to the bitterness between the Cavs and the Wizards and yes, that would be news.
